Antiaesthetic, also written as anti-aesthetic, is a term in art theory used to describe a stance or practice that questions or rejects conventional standards of beauty, taste, and form. It emphasizes disruption, ugliness, irony, or banality over harmony or technical polish, and often foregrounds concept, context, or critique rather than decorative value.

Historically, antiaesthetic approaches appear in the early 20th century with avant-garde movements such as Dada and later Fluxus, and recur in conceptual and postmodern art. Readymades, provocative performances, and installations that expose art’s mechanisms or undermine traditional aesthetic expectations are commonly cited as antiaesthetic strategies.

Key characteristics include a rejection of beauty as the primary criterion for art, a focus on discomfort or provocation, the use of ordinary or repurposed materials, and an emphasis on process, idea, or social critique over formal elegance. Antiaesthetic practices frequently intersect with broader anti-art or anti-idealistic impulses, aiming to destabilize established hierarchies of value within art.

Reception of antiaesthetic work varies. Supporters view it as a liberating challenge to conventional taste, expanding the range of possible artistic expressions and interrogating cultural norms. Critics, however, may regard it as nihilistic or facilitative of purposeless shock.
