The term derives from Antarktika, the Hungarian name for the continent, and is used to describe geography, climate, flora and fauna, and human activities connected with the region. In Hungarian, antarktiszi can modify nouns (antarktiszi terület, antarktiszi élővilág) or appear in phrases referring to the Antarctic region.

Geography and climate: Antarctica lies around the South Pole and is surrounded by the Southern Ocean. It covers about 14 million square kilometers, making it the fifth-largest continent. The interior is extremely cold and dry; the coastal zones experience strong winds and seasonal sea ice.
