Anställningsavtal, or employment contract, is an agreement between an employer and an employee that governs the terms of employment. It can be oral or written, but a written contract is common and provides clarity about the rights and obligations of both parties.

Typical content includes the start date, the employee’s position and duties, place of work, working hours, salary and pay schedule, vacation and sick leave, probationary period, notice of termination, and rules on overtime. Many contracts also cover benefits, confidentiality, use of company equipment, and any restrictive covenants. The agreement may reference collective agreements if applicable and may specify procedures for disputes or changes to terms.

Legal framework and standards: Swedish employment law is primarily shaped by Lagen om anställningsskydd (LAS), which governs grounds for termination, notice periods, and the use of probationary periods. Other statutes regulate working hours, annual leave, and social security aspects. In many sectors, kollektivavtal (collective agreements) apply and can set additional or more favorable terms for employees covered by them. The terms in anställningsavtal cannot undermine mandatory statutory rights, and adjustments to terms generally require mutual consent or appropriate legal basis.

Types of employment contracts: tillsvidareanställning (permanent or indefinite employment) is the most common form, while visstidsanställning (fixed-term) covers a defined period or a specific project, and provanställning (probationary period) offers a trial period during which either party may terminate with a shortened notice. After a probationary period, the contract may become permanent if not terminated.
