tillsvidareanställning

Tillsvidareanställning, or permanent employment, is a contract of employment in Sweden with no predetermined end date. It is the default form of employment and is common for most job hires. The arrangement is governed primarily by the Lagen om anställningsskydd (LAS – the Employment Protection Act) and by applicable collective agreements.

A tillsvidareanställning lasts until terminated by either party. The employer can terminate only with valid grounds (saklig grund), which may be due to personal reasons such as poor performance or conduct, or due to economic reasons such as reorganisations or layoffs. The employee may also resign. In all cases, termination must be given with a legally defined notice period, which is often defined in LAS or a collective agreement and typically depends on length of service. Probation periods, if included, are usually up to six months and during that time either party may terminate more easily.

In contrast, a fixed-term or temporary contract (visstidsanställning) ends on a specified date or upon the completion of a specific task and generally does not give the same level of job security as a tillsvidareanställning; repeated fixed-term contracts can in some circumstances lead to de facto permanent status under LAS.

Employees with tillsvidareanställning enjoy standard employment rights and protections, including paid holidays, sick leave, and parental leave, and they may be entitled to severance pay or intensified notice under collective agreements or company policy.
