The term is a cognate of the word encyclopedia, derived from Greek roots meaning general education or circular learning. In many languages, similar forms exist, such as ansiklopedi, entsüklopeedia, or encyclopedia-like variants, indicating the same broad reference purpose.

Historically, encyclopedic writing has ancient and medieval roots, with works that sought to organize knowledge across disciplines. The modern form crystallized in 18th-century Europe, most notably with Diderot and d’Alembert’s Encyclopédie. Since then, encyclopedias have evolved through national and subject-focused editions and, in the 20th and 21st centuries, into digital formats.
