ansambluri

Ansambluri are bodies of performers in the performing arts: groups of musicians, dancers, actors, or a combination of these, formed to present a cohesive program. They can be professional or amateur, temporary for a project or permanent as an organization. The term is widely used in Romanian to describe both music groups and dance or theatre companies. It derives from ansamblu, ultimately from the French ensemble, meaning a group acting together.

Common types include musical ensembles such as orchestras, chamber groups, choirs, and folk or popular music ensembles; dance ensembles such as folk groups or ballet companies; theatre ensembles or acting troupes; and mixed ensembles that combine several arts. The designations often specify the focus, for example ansamblu instrumental, ansamblu vocal, ansamblu de dansuri populare.

Organizationally, ansambluri are led by an artistic director and, when applicable, a conductor or choreographer. Membership can be fixed or rotating, with rehearsals, repertoire planning, and public performances as core activities. Funding and venues vary; ensembles may be supported by state cultural institutions, municipal authorities, private sponsors, or festival circuits.

Culturally, ansambluri play a central role in preserving and presenting traditional and contemporary arts. In Romania and Moldova, folk and regional ensembles are common in festivals and broadcasts, while urban ensembles may emphasize classical or contemporary repertoire. The term also appears in media to denote a cast or group of performers associated with a production.
