Anovulaatioksi, sometimes referred to as anovulatory cycles, is a medical condition characterized by the absence of ovulation, the release of an egg from the ovary. This lack of ovulation means that conception cannot occur naturally. Anovulation is a common cause of infertility in women and can stem from a variety of underlying issues.

Common causes of anovulation include hormonal imbalances. Conditions such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), which affects hormone levels, is a frequent culprit. Thyroid disorders, whether hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, can also disrupt the hormonal signals necessary for ovulation. High levels of prolactin, a hormone involved in milk production, known as hyperprolactinemia, can also interfere with the ovulatory cycle.

Furthermore, significant weight fluctuations, both underweight and overweight, can impact hormonal regulation and lead to anovulation. Excessive stress and extreme exercise regimens are also recognized factors that can suppress ovulation. In some cases, anovulation can be a symptom of premature ovarian insufficiency, where the ovaries stop functioning normally before the age of 40.

Diagnosis typically involves a medical history, physical examination, and hormonal blood tests to check levels of key reproductive hormones. Ultrasound imaging may also be used to assess the ovaries. Treatment strategies are aimed at addressing the underlying cause and restoring regular ovulation, which may include lifestyle modifications, medication to induce ovulation, or management of hormonal imbalances.
