Their primary function is to connect the anchor to the vessel, providing the necessary tension and holding power to keep the boat stationary. Historically, ankkuriköydet were made from natural fibers such as hemp or manila. While these materials are still used in some applications due to their cost-effectiveness and traditional aesthetic, modern ankkuriköydet are predominantly made from synthetic materials like nylon, polyester, or polypropylene. Synthetic ropes offer superior strength, durability, abrasion resistance, and resistance to rot and mildew compared to natural fibers. The length of an ankkuriköysi is crucial and is typically measured in relation to the depth of the water. A common recommendation is to have a scope of at least 5:1, meaning the length of the rope is five times the depth of the water from the bow of the boat to the seabed. In more demanding conditions, such as strong winds or rough seas, a greater scope might be necessary. The diameter of the ankkuriköysi is determined by the size and displacement of the vessel. Larger and heavier boats require thicker and stronger ropes to withstand the increased forces. The connection point between the ankkuriköysi and the anchor is usually secured with a strong knot or a specialized fitting.
