andrún

Andrún are semi-aquatic beings in the mythic landscape of Eldhyn, a fantasy setting used in literature and games. They are regarded as custodians of freshwater habitats and as guardians of the thresholds between river and land. Folklore portrays them as elusive and shy, appearing mainly at dusk near fast-moving water.

The name Andrún comes from the Eldhyn language, where an- is water and drún denotes guardian or watcher. The term is used for a class of beings rather than a single individual.

In appearance, Andrún are described as slender humanoids ranging from about 1.2 to 1.8 meters in height. They typically have damp, pale or greenish skin with delicate scales along the forearms, webbed fingers, and eyes that glint like rain on water. Some traditions describe them with fins along their backs or gill-like slits on the neck, but descriptions vary by region.

They inhabit freshwater systems: rivers, springs, marshes, and the fringes of lakes. They often dwell in hidden grottoes or submerged caverns and emerge to tend aquatic life, cleanse waters, or guide travelers who show respect to the river.

Behaviorally, Andrún are generally solitary or found in small pairs. They communicate in soft, musical tones and may influence water flow to signal warning or aid. In lore, offerings and respectful conduct toward streams can secure safe passage; disrespect may bring misfortune.
