Androgény, often referred to as male sex hormones, are a group of steroid hormones that play a crucial role in the development and maintenance of male characteristics. While they are primarily associated with males, androgens are also present and have important functions in females. The most well-known androgen is testosterone, but others include androstenedione and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA).

These hormones are produced mainly by the testes in males and by the ovaries and adrenal glands in both sexes. During puberty, androgens are responsible for the development of secondary sexual characteristics in males, such as the deepening of the voice, growth of facial and body hair, and increased muscle mass and bone density. They also stimulate sperm production. In females, androgens contribute to libido, bone health, and muscle strength.

The production and regulation of androgens are controlled by a complex hormonal feedback loop involving the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. Androgen receptors are found throughout the body, allowing these hormones to exert their effects on various tissues. Imbalances in androgen levels can lead to a range of conditions, including infertility, reduced libido, and mood changes. While often discussed in the context of sexual development, androgens also influence metabolism and overall health.
