An anatomista is a scholar or practitioner who studies the structure of living organisms, with emphasis on the form, organization, and relationships of body parts. In Romance languages such as Spanish and Italian, anatomista denotes an anatomist, a person involved in the study or teaching of anatomy. The term derives from the Greek anatomia, from ana- “up, apart” and temnein “to cut,” through Latin and modern Romance languages.

Anatomistas work in education, research, and clinical settings. They may teach anatomy to medical, dentistry, veterinary, and life-sciences students, perform or supervise dissections, and conduct research in areas such as histology, embryology, neuroanatomy, and comparative anatomy. Their work supports medical diagnosis, surgical planning, and advances in understanding organismal structure and development.

Common methods used by anatomistas include gross dissection to study macroscopic structures, histological techniques to examine tissues under the microscope, and increasingly advanced imaging and modeling. Modern practice often involves high-resolution imaging (MRI, CT), digital 3D reconstructions, and atlas creation to document anatomical variation and inform education and clinical practice.

Historically, anatomistas emerged from ancient medical traditions and advanced through figures such as Vesalius in the Renaissance, contributing to a shift from speculative anatomy to evidence-based description. Today, anatomists may hold faculty positions, contribute to medical curricula, or work in research laboratories, museums, or academic publishing, always focusing on the structure of organisms and its functional implications.
