Analgeettinen refers to a substance or treatment that relieves pain. These substances, known as analgesics, work in various ways to reduce or eliminate the sensation of pain. The mechanism of action for analgesics varies. NSAIDs, for instance, inhibit the production of prostaglandins, which are chemicals that contribute to inflammation and pain. Acetaminophen's exact mechanism is not fully understood but is thought to involve the central nervous system. Opioids mimic the effects of endogenous opioids (endorphins) in the body, blocking pain signals and inducing feelings of euphoria.

Analgesics can be administered through various routes, including oral, intravenous, intramuscular, topical, and rectal. The choice of analgesic and its administration method depend on the type and severity of pain, as well as the individual patient's medical history and response. While effective, analgesics can also have side effects. Non-opioids may cause gastrointestinal issues or affect kidney function, while opioids carry the risk of dependence, addiction, and respiratory depression.
