The amnionhöhle, also known as the amniotic cavity, is a fluid-filled sac that develops within the early embryo. It is formed by the amnion, a membrane that encloses the embryo. Initially, the amniotic cavity is small, but it rapidly expands as it fills with amniotic fluid. This fluid plays a crucial role in fetal development and protection.

The amniotic fluid cushions the fetus from external trauma, preventing mechanical injury. It also helps to maintain a constant temperature around the fetus, protecting it from sudden changes in the mother's body temperature. Furthermore, the fluid allows the fetus to move freely, which is essential for the development of muscles and bones. The amniotic cavity also prevents the umbilical cord from being compressed, ensuring a continuous supply of nutrients and oxygen to the fetus.

As pregnancy progresses, the amniotic cavity grows significantly, encompassing the entire fetus. The amniotic fluid is constantly replenished and changes in composition throughout gestation. By the end of pregnancy, the amniotic cavity is a substantial sac that surrounds the fetus before rupture during labor, commonly referred to as "the water breaking." The health and volume of the amniotic fluid are important indicators of fetal well-being.
