Amatorstwo, derived from amator, means the state, practice, or ethos of being an amateur—participation without formal payment or professional status. It denotes doing something for intrinsic motivation, enjoyment, or pursuit of skill rather than financial gain. The suffix -stwo marks a state or condition.

Historically, amateurism has been influential in sports, arts and sciences. In the 19th and early 20th centuries many organizations privileged amateurs over professionals, especially in the Olympic movement and in gentlemanly amateur clubs; this ethos shaped rules about eligibility, amateur status and compensation. The line between amateur and professional has blurred; modern bodies often allow compensation within certain limits or separate divisions.

Today amatorstwo survives as a broad category: hobbyist pursuits, community projects, and citizen science. It emphasizes voluntary participation, personal growth, and access to culture and knowledge regardless of formal training. Critics argue it can impede fair competition, enable exploitation of amateurs, or obscure professional standards; supporters point to creativity, inclusivity, and lower barriers to entry. In Polish usage, amatorstwo is common in sport and arts and is not inherently pejorative, though context matters.
