Amateurzenders are participants in the amateur radio service who operate radio transmitters under licensed status. They engage in a range of activities, including voice conversations, Morse code (CW), digital modes (such as RTTY, PSK31, FT8), satellite communication, and experiments with antennas and RF equipment. They participate in clubs, training, contests, field days, and emergency communication exercises.

Operation is regulated by national authorities within international guidelines set by the ITU. Operators must obtain a license appropriate to their jurisdiction, pass examinations, and adhere to band allocations, power limits, and operating procedures. Stations typically log contacts and use proper identification during transmissions.

Historically, amateurzenders emerged in the early 20th century as spaces for technical experimentation and personal communication. Today they contribute to technology development, education, and public safety by providing radio resources and training, especially during emergencies when other communications are overloaded.
