Amaran, commonly referred to as amaranth, is a term used for plants in the genus Amaranthus as well as for ornamental varieties used in floristry. The name derives from the Greek amarantos, meaning unfading or undying, a reference to the plant’s long-lasting flower heads.

Amaranthus comprises about 60 species of annuals and short-lived perennials. They feature simple leaves and dense inflorescences that can be spires or hanging panicles in colors ranging from green and gold to red and purple. Many species are cultivated for edible leaves (amaranth greens) and seeds, which are used as a pseudocereal in various cuisines. Nutritionally, amaranth greens provide vitamins and minerals, and the seeds are notable for high protein content and the lysine they supply. Some species are grown as ornamentals for garden borders and as cut flowers, while others are considered weeds in agricultural settings.

The term amaran is also used in horticulture as a shorthand for ornamental amaranthus varieties. In regions with suitable climates, amaranth is grown widely across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas, valued for its resilience, versatility, and colorful foliage and blooms.
