Alveolari, in anatomical usage, refers to structures related to alveoli. In anatomy, the term is most commonly used to describe two distinct sets of structures: the pulmonary alveoli of the lungs and the dental alveolar sockets in the jaw.

Pulmonary alveoli: These are microscopic air sacs at the ends of the airway tree where gas exchange occurs. They have thin walls formed by a simple epithelium and are closely associated with a network of capillaries. Type I pneumocytes form the gas-exchange membrane, while Type II pneumocytes secrete surfactant that lowers surface tension to prevent collapse. Oxygen passes into the bloodstream, carbon dioxide diffuses out to be exhaled. The alveolar surface is patrolled by alveolar macrophages, and the integrity of the alveolar-capillary barrier is crucial for efficient respiration. Disruption can lead to edema, reduced gas exchange, or inflammatory lung diseases such as pneumonia or ARDS.

Dental/alveolar bone: In the jaw, teeth are anchored within dental sockets called alveoli, formed by the alveolar process of the maxilla and mandible. The tooth is stabilized by the periodontal ligament, which allows micro-movement and distributes masticatory forces. The alveolar bone remodels with growth, function, and healing. Chronic periodontitis can erode the alveolar bone, leading to tooth mobility and loss. After tooth extraction, alveolar ridge resorption can reduce support for future prosthetics and implants; dental implants rely on osseointegration with remaining alveolar bone.
