Alphachains is a term used in some theoretical and applied disciplines to describe a class of chain-like structures that encode hierarchical and sequential relationships. Conceptually, an alphachain combines linear sequences with controlled branching, allowing modules to be linked and recombined while preserving ordering information.

Because alphachains have no single standardized definition, the term is applied variably across communities. Some use alphachains to model data processing pipelines, others as an abstract representation of composite objects, and still others as a formalism for sequences with labeled relationships.

Applications are diverse and include software architecture for modular pipelines, bioinformatics for modeling chain-like biomolecules, and knowledge representation where complex concepts are built from linked components. Limitations include the lack of standard notation, potential ambiguity in interfaces, and performance overhead for large chains.
