Allergicrelated refers to conditions driven by abnormal immune responses to otherwise harmless substances, collectively known as allergens. Most allergies involve Immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies that sensitize mast cells and basophils, triggering release of histamine and other mediators on re-exposure. Not all allergic-related diseases are IgE-mediated; some involve T cells or other immune pathways.

Common allergic-related conditions include allergic rhinitis (hay fever), atopic dermatitis (eczema), asthma with allergic triggers, food allergies, urticaria (hives), and anaphylaxis in severe cases. Triggers include pollen, animal dander, dust mites, foods (peanuts, milk, shellfish, eggs), insect venom, drugs, and latex. Symptoms range from sneezing, nasal congestion, itching, and rash to wheezing, abdominal pain, or life-threatening shock.

Diagnosis relies on history and exposure assessment, supported by tests such as skin prick testing or serum-specific IgE measurements. For food and drug allergies, oral food challenges or graded exposure may be used. Patch testing helps identify contact dermatitis. In complex cases, component-resolved diagnostics can clarify sensitization patterns.

Management emphasizes avoidance of known triggers when feasible and symptom control with pharmacotherapy: oral or intranasal antihistamines, intranasal corticosteroids, inhaled bronchodilators and corticosteroids for asthma, and topical therapies for dermatitis. Epinephrine auto-injectors are essential for individuals at risk of anaphylaxis. Allergen immunotherapy (subcutaneous or sublingual) can modify the disease course for certain allergens. Biologic therapies targeting IgE or inflammatory pathways are increasingly used in select patients.

Prevention strategies focus on reducing exposure, early life allergen exposure discussions remain debated. Research continues into better diagnostics, personalized immunotherapy, and novel treatments.
