In this view, immune reactions would target peptides or proteins encoded by particular genetic variants, or small molecules shaped by those variants. Proposed mechanisms include molecular mimicry between allele-derived epitopes and environmental allergens, haplotype-specific antigen presentation by HLA molecules, and epitope spreading. Distinct from autoimmune diseases, allergialle reactions are argued to be triggered by external exposures that uniquely interact with a person’s genotype.
