Alkoholtiljet is a term used in some Scandinavian countries, particularly Denmark and Norway, to refer to the residue or sediment that can form in alcoholic beverages, especially wine. This formation is a natural process and is not necessarily an indication of spoilage or poor quality.

The primary components of alkoholtiljet are often tartrates, which are salts of tartaric acid. Tartaric acid is a naturally occurring acid found in grapes and other fruits. When the temperature of the wine drops, these tartrates can precipitate out of the solution and settle at the bottom of the bottle, forming crystals or a fine sediment. This process is more common in wines that have not been heavily filtered or fined.

In some cases, giovane wines or those aged for extended periods may also develop small amounts of sediment from yeast or other organic matter that has not been fully removed. The presence of alkoholtiljet does not typically affect the taste or aroma of the wine negatively, and it is generally considered harmless. Many wine enthusiasts and producers view it as a sign of a wine that has undergone minimal intervention. While it can be aesthetically unappealing to some, it is usually recommended to decant wines with significant alkoholtiljet to separate the liquid from the sediment before serving.
