alkiojuuri

Alkiojuuri, translated as the embryonic root or radicle, is the part of a seed plant embryo that develops into the primary root. It is usually the first root to emerge during germination, appearing when the seed imbibes water and starts to grow. The alkiojuuri typically grows downward into the soil, providing the seedling with an initial anchor and the ability to take up water and nutrients essential for early growth.

Development and structure

The alkiojuuri originates from the basalmost region of the embryo and is protected by a growing tip called the root cap. As germination proceeds, the root cap and underlying meristem generate the tissues of the developing root, including the epidermis, internal cortex, and a central vascular cylinder in many species. The alkiojuuri lays the foundation for the plant’s first root system and often gives rise to the primary root, which in turn supports further root development.

Variation among plants

The fate of the alkiojuuri varies among plant groups. In many dicotyledons, it forms a persistent primary root (taproot) that remains a major part of the mature root system. In many monocotyledons, the primary root may be short-lived and later jeux out by adventitious roots that arise from the stem region. Despite these differences, the embryonic root generally plays a crucial role in securing the seedling and initiating water uptake during the critical early stages of establishment.

Etymology and context
