Algevirágzásként, often translated as algal bloom, refers to the rapid increase in the population of algae in freshwater or marine environments. These events can be caused by a variety of factors, including nutrient enrichment, changes in water temperature, and increased sunlight. When nutrient levels, particularly phosphorus and nitrogen, rise in a body of water, they can act as fertilizers, stimulating algal growth. This process is known as eutrophication.

Algal blooms can vary in appearance, from vibrant green to reddish-brown, depending on the specific type of algae involved. Some algal blooms are harmless, but others can produce toxins that are harmful to aquatic life, wildlife, and even humans. These toxic blooms are referred to as harmful algal blooms, or HABs. HABs can cause fish kills, contaminate shellfish, and create respiratory problems for people and animals. The economic impact can be significant, affecting tourism, fisheries, and public health.

The duration and severity of an algal bloom depend on a number of environmental conditions. Once the nutrients are depleted or other conditions become unfavorable, the bloom typically dies off. The decomposition of the dead algae can deplete oxygen levels in the water, creating hypoxic or anoxic zones that are detrimental to many aquatic organisms. Managing nutrient pollution is a key strategy for preventing and mitigating harmful algal blooms.
