Alfabomlás, also known as the Hungarian Alphabet Reform, was a significant linguistic and educational reform implemented in Hungary in 1949. The reform aimed to simplify the Hungarian alphabet and writing system, making it more phonetic and easier to learn. Prior to the reform, Hungarian used a complex orthography with 45 letters, including several digraphs and special characters.

The alfabomlás introduced a new alphabet consisting of 35 letters, including 29 consonants and 6 vowels. The reform eliminated many digraphs and special characters, replacing them with simpler combinations. For example, the digraph "cs" was replaced with "c", and the digraph "dzs" was replaced with "dz". The reform also introduced new diacritical marks to represent sounds not found in the Latin alphabet, such as the palatalized consonants.

The alfabomlás had a profound impact on Hungarian society. It was seen as a symbol of the post-World War II era and the rise of socialism in Hungary. The reform was supported by the communist government, which saw it as a tool for promoting literacy and education among the working class. However, the reform was also controversial, with some critics arguing that it made the Hungarian language more difficult to learn and less distinct from other languages.

Despite its controversies, the alfabomlás remains an important part of Hungarian history and culture.
