Albumy is a term used in cyclical hair loss to describe a collection of hair follicles that go through a cycle of growth, rest, and shedding at any given time. The term is often used interchangeably with "telogen effluvium" to describe a condition where there is an abnormal increase in the number of hair follicles in the resting phase.

In normal hair growth, approximately 80-90% of hair follicles are in the anagen phase (growing stage) at any given time. The remaining 10-20% are in the telogen phase (resting stage). However, in a condition known as telogen effluvium, an abnormally large number of hair follicles enter the telogen phase simultaneously, leading to excessive hair shedding.
