Alapohjat, literally meaning base foundations in Finnish, refers to a category of sublayers used in geotechnical and construction practice. The term is applied to layers placed directly beneath structures, pavement courses, or other surfaces to form a stable platform. Their primary role is to distribute loads from the overlying elements to the underlying soil, improve drainage, and provide a frost-protected, stable working foundation.

In road construction, alapohja corresponds to the subbase or base course beneath the pavement layers. In building construction, it can refer to the subfloor or foundation base formed by granular fills or stabilized soils. Materials used for alapohjat include granular aggregates such as crushed rock or gravel, sometimes stabilized with cement, lime, or asphalt binders to increase strength and stiffness. Drainage layers and geotextiles are commonly incorporated to control moisture and prevent intermixing with natural soils. The exact composition and thickness depend on climate, soil conditions, and structural loads, and are designed in accordance with national regulations and European geotechnical standards.

Installation typically involves placing the material in lifts and compacting it to a target density or CBR value. Moisture content is controlled to achieve proper compaction, and considerations for drainage and frost protection are integral, particularly in cold climates.

Maintenance concerns for alapohjat include settlement, frost heave, and moisture ingress. When problems arise, remediation may involve additional compaction, drainage modification, or replacement of degraded material to restore performance.
