Akrüülklaas, also known as polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) or acrylic glass, is a transparent thermoplastic material commonly used as a shatter-resistant alternative to glass. It is produced through the polymerization of methyl methacrylate monomer. A key characteristic of acrylic glass is its high optical clarity, often exceeding that of standard glass. It is also significantly lighter than glass, making it easier to handle and install.

One of the primary advantages of acrylic glass is its durability and impact resistance. While not completely unbreakable, it is far less prone to shattering than traditional glass, making it a safer choice in applications where breakage is a concern, such as in aquariums, protective barriers, and children's toys. It also possesses good weather resistance, making it suitable for outdoor applications where it is exposed to sunlight and various environmental conditions.

Acrylic glass can be easily fabricated and molded into various shapes and sizes. It can be cut, drilled, routed, and polished with relative ease. This versatility makes it a popular material for a wide range of uses, including signage, displays, furniture, lighting fixtures, and even in the aerospace industry. Despite its advantages, acrylic glass can be susceptible to scratching, and its thermal expansion is higher than that of glass, which needs to be considered in certain designs.
