ajooikeus

Ajooikeus is the legal right to operate motor vehicles on public roads in Finland. In practice it is granted by holding a valid driving license (ajokortti) issued by the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency (Traficom). The concept is anchored in Finnish road traffic law and is harmonized with the European Union framework, allowing license holders to drive in other EU/EEA states.

Obtaining ajooikeus requires meeting age and health prerequisites, completing mandatory instruction, and passing theory and practical driving tests. Applicants must also provide a vision examination and, where applicable, medical certificates. The licenses are categorized (for example AM, A1, A, B, C, D and their subcategories), reflecting the type of vehicle and driving experience. Some categories grant additional restrictions or require further training.

A driving license remains valid for a certain period and must be renewed. Licenses can be suspended or revoked for traffic violations, medical reasons, or non-compliance with licensing requirements. Driving without a valid ajokortti is illegal and penalties apply.

For international use, EU/EEA license holders can drive in other member states; non-EU visitors may use their license or obtain an international driving permit if required. The licensing authority and police enforce compliance, including checks on license validity, age, and medical fitness.
