Modern chronometers, while still valued for their precision, have largely been superseded by electronic navigation systems like GPS. However, they remain important in certain specialized fields and are highly sought after by collectors and watch enthusiasts. The term "chronometer" is also used today to certify watches that have passed rigorous accuracy tests set by official bodies like the Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres (COSC).
