Aivosyöpä, or brain cancer, refers to the growth of abnormal cells within the brain. These can originate directly from brain tissue (primary brain tumors) or spread from other parts of the body (secondary or metastatic brain tumors). Primary brain tumors can be either benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Benign tumors, while not cancerous, can still cause significant problems by pressing on vital brain structures. Malignant tumors are aggressive and have the potential to invade surrounding brain tissue and spread.

Symptoms of brain cancer vary greatly depending on the tumor's location, size, and growth rate. Common signs can include persistent headaches, nausea and vomiting, seizures, changes in personality or behavior, vision or hearing problems, and difficulties with speech, balance, or coordination. Neurological examinations, imaging techniques like MRI and CT scans, and sometimes a biopsy are used for diagnosis.

Treatment options for brain cancer depend on the type of tumor, its grade, and the patient's overall health. They may include surgery to remove as much of the tumor as possible, radiation therapy to kill cancer cells, and chemotherapy to stop cancer cell growth. Newer treatments like targeted therapy and immunotherapy are also being developed. The prognosis for brain cancer is highly variable, with outcomes influenced by numerous factors including the specific diagnosis and the extent of the disease.
