Aivohyökkäys is a Finnish term that translates to "brain attack" or "stroke" in English. It refers to a sudden and severe disruption of blood flow to the brain, leading to a loss of brain function. This can occur in two primary ways: an ischemic stroke, caused by a blockage in a blood vessel, or a hemorrhagic stroke, caused by bleeding within the brain.

Ischemic strokes are the most common type, accounting for about 85% of all cases. They happen when a blood clot forms in a cerebral artery or when plaque builds up and narrows the arteries, restricting blood flow. Hemorrhagic strokes, while less common, are often more severe. They are caused by the rupture of a blood vessel in the brain, leading to bleeding that damages brain tissue.

Symptoms of an aivohyökkäys often appear suddenly and can vary depending on the area of the brain affected. Common signs include a sudden weakness or numbness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body. Difficulty speaking or understanding speech, vision problems in one or both eyes, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination, and a severe headache with no known cause are also indicative. Recognizing these symptoms promptly is crucial, as immediate medical attention can significantly improve outcomes and reduce the risk of long-term disability or death. Prompt treatment for ischemic strokes often involves clot-busting medications or mechanical thrombectomy to remove the blockage. For hemorrhagic strokes, treatment may focus on controlling bleeding and reducing pressure within the skull.
