An ahupuaa is a traditional Hawaiian land division that extends from the mountains to the sea. These pie-shaped areas were designed to encompass all the resources needed for a community to thrive. Each ahupuaa typically included a freshwater source from the mountains, fertile land for farming in the valleys, and access to the ocean for fishing and gathering marine resources. The name ahupuaa comes from the Hawaiian words "ahu" meaning pile or heap, and "puaa" meaning pig. Historically, boundary markers for ahupuaa were often marked by piles of stones topped with a pig's head.

The ahupuaa system was a sophisticated form of land management and resource allocation that supported the ancient Hawaiian population. The boundaries were not rigid lines but rather followed natural features like ridges and streams.
