Agnozi is a term that refers to a specific type of sensory processing disorder. It is characterized by the inability to recognize or interpret sensory information, such as visual objects, sounds, smells, or tactile sensations, despite the sensory organs themselves being intact and functioning properly. In essence, the brain has difficulty making sense of the incoming signals.

There are several forms of agnozi, categorized by the sense affected. Visual agnosia is the most common, where an individual can see objects but cannot identify them. They might be able to describe the shape or color of an object but fail to recognize it as, for example, a chair or a cup. Auditory agnosia affects the ability to recognize sounds, while tactile agnosia impacts the recognition of objects through touch. Anosognosia, sometimes considered a related condition, is a lack of awareness of one's own deficits, including neurological impairments.

Agnozi typically results from damage to specific areas of the brain, often caused by stroke, head injury, brain tumors, or neurodegenerative diseases. Diagnosis involves a thorough neurological examination and specialized tests to assess sensory perception and recognition. Treatment is largely focused on managing the underlying cause and developing compensatory strategies to help individuals cope with their difficulties. There is no cure for agnozi itself, but rehabilitation can improve quality of life.
