Agnanam is a Sanskrit term that translates to ignorance or lack of knowledge. In spiritual and philosophical contexts, particularly within Hinduism, it refers to a fundamental ignorance of one's true nature or the ultimate reality. This ignorance is often described as the root cause of suffering and the cycle of birth and death (samsara).

Different schools of Hindu philosophy interpret agnanam in various ways. Advaita Vedanta, for instance, posits that agnanam is not merely a lack of factual information but a mistaken identification of the self (Atman) with the body, mind, and ego. This misapprehension leads one to believe they are separate and limited individuals, rather than the all-pervading, eternal consciousness.

Overcoming agnanam is a central goal in many spiritual paths.
