Aesthete (plural aesthetes) refers to a person who has or cultivates a heightened sensitivity to beauty, particularly in art, literature, and nature. The term derives from the Greek aisthētēs, meaning perceiver or perceiver of sensation, and in English has long carried connotations of refined taste and affectation. An aesthete may seek to experience beauty as an end in itself rather than as a means to moral, political, or utilitarian ends.

Historically, the term is closely associated with the Aesthetic Movement of the late 19th century, especially in Britain, which championed art for art's sake. Figures such as Oscar Wilde, Walter Pater, and James McNeill Whistler were influential in articulating an emphasis on form, color, and sensorial experience over conventional didactic or moral purposes. Aesthetes often promoted elegant living and meticulous attention to the presentation of objects and spaces.

In practice, aesthetes are characterized by refined taste, careful attention to beauty in daily life, and a predisposition toward stylistic sophistication. The label can be neutral in descriptive usage but is frequently used pejoratively to suggest pretension or superficiality. In contemporary usage, it may describe someone with strong aesthetic sensibilities without implying a formal role in the arts.
