Aeronautics is the science and practice of flight within Earth's atmosphere. It encompasses the design, development, testing, operation, and propulsion of aircraft and related systems.

The discipline rests on the interaction of four forces: lift, weight, thrust, and drag. Lift arises primarily from the aircraft’s wings due to pressure differences; thrust from propulsion, weight from gravity, and drag from air resistance. Flight relies on a balance of these forces and on flight mechanics, including stability and control.

Major subfields include aerodynamics, propulsion, avionics and flight control, structures and materials, aeroelasticity, and systems engineering. Other areas address air traffic management, human factors, safety, and certification. Fixed-wing aircraft, rotary-wing aircraft, and lighter-than-air craft each present distinct design challenges and operating envelopes.

Historically, aeronautics began with experiments by inventors such as Leonardo da Vinci and the Montgolfier brothers, progressed through the early powered flights of the Wright brothers, and expanded during the jet age into mass air travel and advanced military aircraft. Modern practice emphasizes computational modeling, wind tunnel testing, and materials such as composites.

Industries and regulatory bodies shape the field: commercial aviation, defense, and research rely on standards established by organizations like the International Civil Aviation Organization, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency. Certification, airworthiness, and safety analysis are core activities.

Emerging trends include electric and hybrid propulsion, urban air mobility, autonomous flight, and air traffic management modernization aimed at increasing efficiency and reducing emissions.
