Applied Energistics 2 (AE2) is a technology-focused mod for Minecraft that replaces conventional chests with an ME network for digital storage, automation, and item management. The core idea is to store items as data on storage cells and access them through a centralized network rather than physical containers.

A typical AE2 system centers on the ME Controller, which acts as the network’s brain, connected via ME Cables to components such as storage drives and interfaces. Storage drives hold storage cells (1k, 4k, 16k, and 64k), which store items in compact digital form. The ME Terminal provides a user interface to browse and request items, while the Pattern Terminal is used to create crafting patterns that instruct the system how to assemble items.

Autocrafting is enabled by the Molecular Assembler and Crafting CPUs, allowing the network to automatically craft items once the necessary patterns and materials are available. External inventories can be connected with Export and Import Buses, and Interfaces link the ME network to machines and conduits in the world. AE2 also supports fluid storage through dedicated interfaces and drives, expanding the digital storage concept to liquids.

Connectivity and access can be extended with wireless options, such as wireless terminals, enabling remote interaction with the ME network. The system is power-dependent, drawing energy from compatible sources in a modded environment.

AE2 is widely used in modern modpacks for its compact storage, searchable inventories, and robust automation capabilities. It has undergone several updates to support new Minecraft versions and integration with other mods, while remaining a common centerpiece for digital storage and automated crafting workflows.
