Etymology and naming often reflect its tongue-in-cheek origin. The term is formed from the root adverbium (Latin for “adverb”) combined with the mineral suffix -ite, signaling a conventional mineral name while signaling its fictional status. The name is intended to evoke a link between linguistic concepts and mineralogical form, though no real analogue exists in minerals science.

In its fictional literature contexts, adverbiliite is described as forming in hydrothermal veins within carbonate-rich rocks during low-grade metamorphism. It is typically associated with minerals such as calcite, dolomite, and serpentine. The material is said to occur in small, irregular crystals or as compact masses within veined rock centers.

Physical properties attributed in these contexts commonly include a color range from emerald-green to teal, a vitreous to resinous luster, and a transparent to translucent appearance. Reported hardness is around 6 on the Mohs scale, with pale streak, monoclinic crystal system, and prismatic habit. Cleavage is described as good in two directions, and density is suggested to lie in the 3.2–3.6 g/cm3 range. Some fictional descriptions include blue fluorescence under ultraviolet light and pronounced pleochroism.
