Adventiivinen is a Finnish term used in biology, ecology and botany to describe organisms or features that originate outside their usual geographic or developmental context. In practice, the word is applied to species that have entered a new area and established populations without being native, as well as to structures that arise in non-typical places within organisms. The concept is closely related to the English terms “adventive” or “adventitious.”

In botany, adventiivinen commonly refers to adventitious structures or individuals. Adventitious roots, buds or shoots can develop from non-root tissues such as stems or leaves, rather than from the root axis. The term is also used for plants that appear in a region where they are not native but have become self-sustaining populations. It is important to distinguish adventive from native or endemic and from invasive; adventive does not imply harm or aggressive spread.

In cultivation and horticulture, adventitious rooting is a key mechanism in cuttings, tissue culture and grafting, enabling plants to form roots or shoots from unusual tissues. Adventive plants can be introduced through human activity, such as trade and transport, or through natural dispersal mechanisms.
