Adrenaliinipistos, commonly known as an adrenaline shot or epinephrine auto-injector, is a pre-measured dose of epinephrine delivered via a pen-like device. It is primarily used for the emergency treatment of anaphylaxis, a severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. Anaphylaxis can occur rapidly after exposure to allergens such as certain foods, insect stings, medications, or latex.

When someone experiences anaphylaxis, their body releases a surge of chemicals, including histamine, which can cause a range of symptoms. These symptoms can include hives, itching, swelling of the face, lips, or throat, difficulty breathing, wheezing, a drop in blood pressure, dizziness, and loss of consciousness. Epinephrine works by counteracting these effects. It constricts blood vessels, which helps to raise blood pressure and reduce swelling. It also relaxes the muscles in the airways, making it easier to breathe, and increases heart rate.

The adrenaline shot is designed for easy self-administration or administration by a bystander. The user typically removes a safety cap, places the device against the outer thigh, and presses down firmly until a click is heard, indicating the injection has been delivered. The needle is automatically retracted after the dose is administered. It is crucial to seek immediate medical attention after using an adrenaline shot, even if symptoms improve, as a second reaction, known as a biphasic reaction, can occur hours later. Individuals with a history of severe allergic reactions are often prescribed epinephrine auto-injectors and are trained on how and when to use them.
