Adipocyte is a cell that primarily constitutes adipose tissue, commonly known as body fat. These cells are responsible for storing energy in the form of fat, or triglycerides. While often associated with weight gain, adipocytes play crucial roles in metabolism, hormone production, and insulation.

There are two main types of adipocytes: white adipocytes and brown adipocytes. White adipocytes are the most abundant and their primary function is to store fat for energy. They form large lipid droplets that push the nucleus and cytoplasm to the periphery of the cell. Brown adipocytes, on the other hand, are specialized for thermogenesis, or heat production. They contain numerous small lipid droplets and a high concentration of mitochondria, which give them their characteristic brown color.

Adipocytes are not merely passive storage units. They are metabolically active and secrete various hormones and signaling molecules, collectively known as adipokines. These adipokines, such as leptin and adiponectin, influence appetite, insulin sensitivity, inflammation, and energy expenditure. Dysregulation of adipocyte function and the imbalance of adipokine secretion are implicated in various metabolic disorders, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. The development and maintenance of healthy adipose tissue are therefore important for overall health.
