Acusia is a medical term that refers to a complete loss of hearing. It is also known as anacusis. This condition signifies a profound inability to perceive any sound, ranging from the softest whisper to the loudest noise. Acusia can affect one or both ears, and its causes are diverse.

Common causes of acusia include congenital conditions, meaning a person is born with the hearing loss. This can be due to genetic factors or complications during pregnancy and childbirth. Acquired acusia can result from various factors later in life. These include damage to the inner ear from loud noise exposure, certain medications that are ototoxic (harmful to the ear), infections such as meningitis, head injuries, and tumors affecting the auditory nerve or brain. Age-related hearing loss, known as presbycusis, can also progress to severe levels, though complete acusia from presbycusis alone is less common.

Diagnosing acusia typically involves comprehensive audiological evaluations, including pure-tone audiometry and speech audiometry, to objectively measure the extent of hearing loss. In cases of complete loss, other auditory tests may be used to confirm the absence of auditory function. Treatment options for acusia are limited, as the damage to the auditory system is often irreversible. However, assistive devices like cochlear implants can provide a sense of sound for some individuals with profound hearing loss by bypassing the damaged parts of the ear and directly stimulating the auditory nerve. Rehabilitation and communication strategies, such as sign language, are also crucial for individuals experiencing acusia to facilitate communication and improve their quality of life.
