Acetaldeído, also known as ethanal, is an organic compound with the chemical formula CH3CHO. It is a volatile, colorless liquid with a pungent, fruity odor. Acetaldeído is the second-largest aldehyde produced industrially. It occurs naturally in fruits and vegetables and is a byproduct of alcohol metabolism in humans and animals.

Industrially, acetaldeído is primarily produced by the Wacker process, which involves the oxidation of ethylene in the presence of a palladium chloride catalyst. It can also be synthesized through the oxidation of ethanol or the hydration of acetylene. Acetaldeído is an important intermediate in the production of various chemicals, including acetic acid, pyridine, and pentaerythritol. It is also used in the synthesis of perfumes, dyes, and plastics.

Acetaldeído is flammable and can form explosive mixtures with air. It is an irritant to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. Exposure to high concentrations can cause dizziness, nausea, and headaches. Acetaldeído is classified as a probable human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).

In biological systems, acetaldeído is a toxic metabolite of ethanol. When alcohol is consumed, it is broken down in the liver by the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase into acetaldeído. This substance is then further metabolized by the enzyme acetaldehyde dehydrogenase into acetic acid, which is less toxic. However, if acetaldehyde dehydrogenase activity is impaired, acetaldeído can accumulate in the body, leading to unpleasant symptoms such as facial flushing, nausea, and vomiting, commonly known as the "Asian flush" or alcohol flush reaction.
