The accessibilitetskaskad, or accessibility cascade, refers to the phenomenon where digital content, initially designed with accessibility in mind, gradually loses its accessibility as it is processed, transformed, or displayed through various systems and layers. This can occur in several stages, starting from the original creation of content.

For example, a well-designed webpage with proper semantic markup and alternative text for images might be accessible in its raw HTML form. However, if a Content Management System (CMS) or a website builder then renders this content without maintaining the semantic structure or stripping away the alt text, accessibility is compromised. Further down the chain, a browser extension, a screen reader, or even a specific device's display settings can introduce additional layers that might inadvertently degrade accessibility.

The cascade effect highlights the importance of considering the entire ecosystem of content delivery and consumption. It is not enough for the original author to create accessible content; all subsequent processes and technologies involved must also preserve or enhance that accessibility. Failure to do so can result in a significant portion of the intended audience being excluded from accessing the information. This concept is particularly relevant in discussions about web standards, assistive technologies, and universal design.
