Abuffer is a term used in computer science and digital electronics to denote a memory region or data structure that temporarily holds data as it moves between subsystems that run at different rates. The term emphasizes the buffering role of absorbing variability in data arrival and in processing pace, thereby decoupling producers from consumers and helping to manage latency and peak load. In practice, abuffers may be implemented as simple arrays, as circular/ring buffers, or as more complex queue structures.

Common forms and uses include circular buffers (ring buffers), first-in-first-out (FIFO) queues, and multi-producer/multi-consumer buffers. They may be implemented in software, hardware, or in hybrid form. In software, abuffers are used to hold network packets, audio samples, video frames, and file I/O blocks to prevent underflow or overflow and to align timing between subsystems. In hardware, buffers decouple peripherals from processors and provide a staging area for data transfer.

Design considerations for an abuffer include capacity, data integrity, and access semantics such as blocking versus non-blocking reads and writes, synchronization, and backpressure. Many implementations support multiple producers and consumers and may enforce mutual exclusion or use lock-free algorithms to improve performance. The choice of data structure affects latency, memory usage, and throughput.
