Absorptioemission refers to the process by which a substance absorbs electromagnetic radiation at certain wavelengths and then re-emits radiation at other wavelengths. This phenomenon is fundamental to understanding how matter interacts with light and is observed across various fields, including physics, chemistry, and astronomy.

The absorption part of the process involves electrons within atoms or molecules gaining energy from incoming photons, causing them to transition to higher energy levels. These energy levels are quantized, meaning only specific discrete amounts of energy can be absorbed, corresponding to specific wavelengths of light. Once in a higher energy state, the atom or molecule is in an excited state.

The emission part occurs when these excited electrons return to their lower energy ground state. This transition releases the excess energy, typically in the form of a photon. The energy of the emitted photon, and therefore its wavelength, is determined by the energy difference between the excited state and the ground state. Often, the emitted photon has lower energy than the absorbed photon, meaning it is re-emitted at a longer wavelength. This difference in energy is often lost as heat or through vibrational relaxation.

Spectroscopy, a technique that studies the interaction between matter and electromagnetic radiation, heavily relies on absorptioemission. By analyzing the wavelengths of light absorbed and emitted, scientists can identify the composition and structure of substances.
