Absoluuturgaat, also known as absolute ruler or despot, refers to a form of government where a single person holds supreme and unchecked power. This power is typically inherited or seized and is not subject to any legal or constitutional limitations. The decisions of an absoluuturgaat are final and cannot be challenged by any other entity within the state.

Historically, many monarchies operated under principles of absolutism. In such systems, the monarch's authority was often seen as divinely ordained, granting them a right to rule without needing to consult or gain consent from their subjects. Examples include Louis XIV of France, who famously declared "L'état, c'est moi" (I am the state), and Peter the Great of Russia.

The concept of an absoluuturgaat stands in contrast to systems of limited government, constitutional monarchies, or republics, where power is distributed and subject to checks and balances. Critics often associate absolutism with tyranny and oppression due to the potential for abuse of power when there are no mechanisms for accountability. However, proponents might argue that absolute rule can lead to swift decision-making and efficient governance, especially during times of crisis.
