Absoluutti is a term used in perfumery to describe a highly concentrated aromatic extract. Unlike essential oils, which are typically extracted using steam distillation or cold pressing, absolutes are produced through a solvent extraction process. This method allows for the capture of a wider range of aromatic compounds, often resulting in richer, more complex, and true-to-nature scents.

The process typically begins with the raw aromatic material, such as flowers, resins, or mosses. This material is washed with a hydrocarbon solvent, which dissolves the aromatic molecules. The resulting mixture is then filtered to remove any solid plant matter. Next, the solvent is evaporated, leaving behind a waxy substance called a "concrete." This concrete is then further processed, usually with alcohol, to remove the remaining waxes and impurities. The final product is the absolute, a viscous liquid with an intense fragrance.

Absolutes are highly valued in perfumery for their depth and tenacity. They are often used as key notes in fine fragrances, contributing to the overall character and longevity of a scent. Due to the intensive extraction process and the high concentration of aromatic compounds, absolutes are generally more expensive than essential oils. Common examples include rose absolute, jasmine absolute, and tolu balsam absolute.
