Abrasivity is the property of a material or medium to wear away or abrade another surface through mechanical action, such as scraping, grinding, or cutting. It depends on factors including particle sharpness, hardness relative to the target, size and concentration of abrasive material, contact pressure, motion, and the presence of lubricants or binders. Because abrasivity is highly context dependent, a substance may be very abrasive to one material and only mildly abrasive to another.

In industrial settings, abrasivity is measured with wear tests such as pin-on-disk, Taber abrasion, or sand-blast simulations. Output metrics include wear rate (volume lost per unit load and distance) and, in some cases, the coefficient of friction. In consumer products like toothpaste, abrasivity is reported as Relative Dentin Abrasivity (RDA), based on standardized testing against a dentin surface; higher RDA values indicate greater abrasivity. These measurements help balance cleaning efficacy with the risk of surface damage.

Applications span manufacturing and finishing processes (abrasive papers, grinding wheels, polishing media) as well as natural processes (erosion by wind and water). Excessive abrasivity can cause unwanted wear or surface roughening and may pose health risks from dust exposure, so appropriate controls and standards are used to ensure safety and performance. Overall, abrasivity is a contextual property that requires specification for a given material pair and application.
