Zylinderrollen

Zylinderrollen are cylindrical rolling elements used to carry radial loads in rolling-element bearings. They are rigid cylinders with a circular cross-section that run between inner and outer raceways, producing line contact. This contact configuration gives high radial stiffness and a substantial radial load capacity relative to equivalent ball bearings, making Zylinderrollen suitable for demanding applications.

Zylinderrollen bearings come in several arrangements, including single-row, double-row, and multi-row configurations. They may use different cage designs (steel or polymer) or be of full-complement type. To improve load distribution and reduce contact stresses, the rollers are sometimes slightly crowned along their length. Materials are typically bearing steels (for example, 100Cr6/52100) that are hardened and ground to meet accuracy and hardness requirements.

Common applications include machine tools and spindles, gearboxes, rolling mills, and other heavy machinery where high stiffness and load-carrying capacity are essential. They are used in combinations with appropriate inner and outer races to form cylindrical roller bearings (Zylinderrollenlager).

Limitations include limited ability to accommodate axial loads without additional components; axial guidance is typically provided by other bearing elements or thrust bearings. Proper lubrication is crucial for performance and longevity; options include grease or oil lubrication, with seals used to keep contaminants out.
